Linking current difficulties to schema origins

Adapted from the ‘Schema Therapy For Eating Disorders Group Manual’ by Susan Simpson.

If we want to change certain behavior we exhibit or the choices we make, we have to know what caused us to act this way. What do we (think we) gain by this way of handling a situation? Maybe even more importantly, what does it cost us?

To make changes that will last, we have to get to the root of our patterns. Below you have the chance to see a clear link between the past that shaped your behaviour and may even be dictating your future. By working through these patterns you will educate yourself on how you want to act instead of being at the mercy of your past.

Learning from the past provides us with wisdom to build the future.

In Schema Therapy we aim to make the link between the present and the past as we are trying to make sense of current reactions, interpersonal patterns, thought processes and ways of coping, in the context of what happened and what was learned during childhood. This resource could be helpful to gain a deeper understanding of one’s early maladaptive schemas and the link between current difficulties and childhood origins.
